Dennis Kass at 2014 IASIU Conference

Founded in 1984 by a group of insurance industry fraud investigators, the International Association of Special Investigation Units (IASIU) is a non-profit organization dedicated to:
    •   Promoting a coordinated effort within the industry to combat insurance fraud;
    •   Providing education and training for insurance investigators;
    •   Developing greater awareness of the insurance fraud problem;
    •   Encouraging high professional standards of conduct among insurance investigators; and
    •   Supporting legislation that acts as a deterrent to the crime of insurance fraud.

IASIU’s membership is made up of thousands of members representing hundreds of insurance companies around the world. Members are employees of insurance or self-insured special investigation units, special agents or supervisors of the National Insurance Crime Bureau (NICB) or Insurance Crime Prevention Bureau. Associate members are insurance company personnel who support the investigative process and the law enforcement community involved in insurance fraud investigation.

From September 14–17, 2014, thousands of insurance professionals from all over the world celebrated the IASIU 30th Anniversary and attended the 29th Annual Seminar. On Tuesday evening, September 16, the law firms of Manning & Kass and Kalbaugh, Pfund & Messersmith hosted a special cocktail reception for insurance professionals at the Grandover Room in the Sheraton Four Seasons. On Wednesday, September 17, IASIU Southern California co-counsel and founding partner Dennis B. Kass taught a workshop titled, “Affirmative Litigation Issues,” which covered issues facing carriers when pursuing affirmative litigation. Topics included:  (a) available causes of action; (b) focusing the investigation; (c) the role of counsel and company during the investigation (d) managing the litigation; (e) case examples re building a case; (f) settlement agreements; (g) enforcement; and (h) expenses.
