Lynn Carpenter Speaks at LAPA’s Holiday Benefit Gala

Los Angeles Associate Lynn Carpenter was the guest speaker at LAPA’s (Los Angeles Paralegal Association) Holiday Benefit Gala. She spoke about the importance of being an advocate, or one who pleads the cause of another and about the three qualities that make a good advocate: humility, integrity, and compassion, as modeled by Mahatma Gandhi, Abraham Lincoln, and Nelson Mandela, all lawyers. Nelson Mandela was elected president after serving 27 years in prison for being a strident advocate against apartheid. He was able to put his personal feelings aside, model forgiveness, and help usher in a new era in South Africa by encouraging a common purpose and helping to build almost universal support for the Country’s rugby team. When the team went on to win the rugby world cup, it was a moment where everyone was united in their joy, rather than the pain and hatred caused by apartheid. She closed by encouraging the paralegals in attendance to build a coalition on behalf of their clients by using the three tools mentioned above in the coming year.

Ms. Carpenter practices with the Governmental Entity Liability Team. Prior to joining Manning & Kass, she was an assistant district attorney in Payne County, Oklahoma where her work as lead or co-counsel resulted in the successful prosecution of complex felony assault trials including child abuse, sexual assault, and domestic violence. As an assistant district attorney, Ms. Carpenter developed special training protocols in conjunction with law enforcement professionals for evidence gathering and trial preparation.
