Katherine J. Hwang is a Partner in the Los Angeles office of Manning Kass. She is a member of the Appellate Law (Strategy, Writs, & Appeals) team.

Ms. Hwang graduated with honors from the University of California, Berkeley, with a Bachelor of Arts in American Studies and a minor in Human Rights. She received her Juris Doctor from Benjamin N. Cardozo School of Law in New York City.
 
While in law school, Ms. Hwang was a member of two law journals and interned with the Honorable John F. Keenan of the United States District Court for the Southern District of New York, the United States Attorney’s Office, Eastern District of New York (Civil Division), and the Kings County District Attorney’s Office.

Following law school, Ms. Hwang practiced in the New York City area for many years, first as a Staff Attorney with CLIHHR and post-graduate fellow with the Open Society Justice Initiative, then as a clerk for the Honorable Sheila A. Venable, P.J.Cr., Superior Court of New Jersey, and also as a civil litigator with a general practice firm. She then became a civil and criminal prosecutor and investigated fraud, corruption, and abuse while with the New York Attorney General's Office, the New York City Department of Investigation and the Bronx County District Attorney's Office. She also served as an investigative consultant with the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization, Office of Inspector General.

Prior to joining Manning Kass, Ms. Hwang was a Deputy Attorney General with the California Department of Justice and then owner and principal of her own firm, serving as Of Counsel to various defensive firms in California and New York in the areas of general liability, business litigation, criminal law, and post-conviction relief in both state and federal courts. It was when Ms. Hwang started her own firm that she found her passion for law and motion and appellate work.

Ms. Hwang previously served as a Board Member of the New York County Lawyers Association and Co-Chair of its Young Lawyers Section, and for her dedication, she received the Young Lawyers Section Rising Star award. She also led the Freedom of Expression Subcommittee with the New York City Bar Association’s African Affairs Committee. She currently volunteers with Public Counsel’s Appellate Clinic for Self-Represented Litigants.

Ms. Hwang is admitted to the California State Bar, all District Courts in California, the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals, the New York State Bar, and the Southern District of New York.
