Legal Insight: U.S. Supreme Court Expands Scope of RICO to Allow Recovery for Economic Losses Derived From Personal Injuries
In a 5-4 decision issued on April 2, 2025, in Medical Marijuana, Inc., et al. v. Horn, 23-365, the U.S. Supreme Court held that “a plaintiff may seek treble damages for business or property loss even if the loss resulted from a personal injury” under the Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act (“RICO”), 18 U.S.C. § 1964(c).

David R. Ruiz and Lynn L. Carpenter Prevail Against Wrongful Death Claim
General Counsel David R. Ruiz and Los Angeles Partner Lynn L. Carpenter recently prevailed against a claim of wrongful death in the custody of our clients, a public entity. Mr. Ruiz and Ms. Carpenter successfully argued that statutory immunity applied as to all of the plaintiff’s negligence claims, and the Court agreed, granting our Motion for Summary Judgment and adopting the tentative ruling in full.
